The JR Kabe Line for Aki-Kameyama

The JR Kabe Line is a commuter line in Hiroshima City that runs a south-to-north route connecting Hiroshima Station and Aki-Kameyama Station.

Tourists visiting Hiroshima may use the Kabe Line to access Mitaki-dera Temple, but other than that there are not many sightseeing attractions along this line.

Destinations

Kabe Line services follow the Sanyo Main Line between Hiroshima Station and Yokogawa Station before joining the Kabe Line proper. There are 16 stations on the Kabe Line route.

Shin-Hakushima Station

Hiroshima Castle is a 15-minute walk south of Shin-Hakushima Station.

Transfers can be made here to Hiroshima Rapid Transit’s Astram Line with services bound for Hondori and Koiki-koen-mae. Koiki-koen-mae Station is the stop for the Hiroshima Big Arch sports stadium.

Yokogawa Station

Hiroshima Electric Railway’s streetcar system, known as “Hiroden,” has two routes that run from Yokogawa Station: Route 7, which runs to Hiroshima Port; and Route 8, which runs to Eba.

Mitaki Station

Exit here for Mitaki-dera Temple. Mitaki-dera is one of Hiroshima’s lesser-known attractions, but is a beautiful temple and serene temple complex that is definitely worth exploring. The temple was founded in 809 and is dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist spirit of mercy. The name “Mitaki” means “three falls” because there are three waterfalls on the temple grounds. The temple is a 15-minute walk from the station.

Omachi Station

Transfers can be made here to Hiroshima Rapid Transit’s Astram Line with services bound for Hondori and Koiki-koen-mae. Koiki-koen-mae Station is the stop for the Hiroshima Big Arch sports stadium.

Bairin Station

Exit here for the Torrential Rain Disaster Memorial Center. This facility is a museum that commemorates the disaster that befell the Asakita and Asaminami Wards in Northern Hiroshima in 2014, when torrential rains caused several landslides. As a result, 179 homes were destroyed and 77 lives lost. As well as displays related to the disaster, the museum offers workshops and classes on disaster prevention and preparation. The museum is an 8-minute walk from Bairin Station.

Kabe Station

Kabe Station is a 3-minute walk from Myo Jinja Shrine. This is a small local shrine with some unusual features: water barrels held up by painted frogs, a decorated manhole cover where students pray for success in exams, and the two guardian statues of komainu “lion-dogs,” which are accompanied by puppies balancing on the balls between the komainu’ paws. The shrine also hosts a lively local festival in July which is said to have a history of over 260 years.

Kabe Station was the terminal station of the Kabe Line between 2003 and 2017, when the line was extended as far as Aki-Kameyama.

Aki-Kameyama Station

This is the terminal station of the Kabe Line.
